Explore Alliance Presents: How Do You KNOW? – Episode #51: ''Understanding Planetary Nebulae"
Planetary nebulae are some of the most beautiful and intriguing deep sky objects in the Milky Way. They reveal the expanding, glowing shells of their parent star as an emission nebula gas ejected from red giant stars late in their lives. Discovered in the late 1700's planetary nebulae are unrelated to planets, William Herschel popularized the name as these compact, round shaped objects were described as "fading planets".
Planetary nebulae teach us a lot about stellar evolution, and through spectral analysis we can gain a greater understanding of how elements are formed. This the topic of Dr. Daniel Barth in the 51st How Do You KNOW?
